With today’s webOS purchase, HP gave notice that they’ll do their best to ditch Microsoft in every way. HP is poised to ship PC’s without paying a Microsoft tax for the first time in many years. You could find yourself running Windows on HP computers in a virtual OS session, within the HP WebOS desktop. That’s how Apple’s Mac owners use Windows today. Three magic words: No Windows Tax. Soon.

This Friday Microsoft and Nokia are supposed to announce a joint venture of some kind. A future version of the Windows Phone 7 mobile OS software that will be tightly coupled to phones designed and built by Nokia is on deck. I like to think of the new venture as “Microkia” and their new product as the “Phune” because I love rhyming, and that rhymes with Zune. I won’t call it a certain fail, because I know that billions of dollars can buy success.

I prefer the Celsius temperature scale these days because the correlation between that minus sign and the likelihood of freezing to death if you put your car in the ditch is so powerful and unmistakeable. Which implies that Fahrenheit might be a snare for the unwary, like “It’s 25 outside, guess I won’t need a parka today.” Around here they call that sort of thing an Aggie Trap, an unkind reference to Texas A&M commonly used by any Texan who attended some other school.

People are complaining about the ads in the new Android version of Angry Birds all over the net, but most of them probably don’t realize how easy it is to stop the ads. If you haven’t experienced the Android version of the game, some levels are extremely annoying and difficult to play because the ads cover important screen elements. I can’t even tell you how frustrating it is to want to trigger a bird move when the bird is behind an ad.

The key thing to keep in mind is that the ads are being served over your 3G or WiFi connection while you’re playing. To stop them all you have to do is turn off the radios. The game plays perfectly in Airplane Mode on my Droid X, and now I’ve only got two more golden eggs to track down. Enjoy!
